By releasing a small amount of DEET-free repellent into the surrounding air, the lantern is capable of creating a 4.5 m2 (15 sf) bug-free area in the backyard by keeping away pests such as mosquitoes, black flies and other insects. It has a European-inspired, wrought iron design to give the lantern a classic look, while the frosted globe offers two illumination settings. Powered by four 'AA' batteries, it uses a 12-hour butane cartridge that is stored internally for aesthetics and ease-of-use.
