The owners of this newly renovated Thornhill, Ont., home wanted a lifestyle backyard as an entertainment focal point for family and friends. To do this, however, the first priority was to solve a drainage problem by incorporating raised, sloped decks in architecturally stamped concrete to re-direct water runoff away from the house.
As the split-level home has two patio walkouts, lower and upper decks were created. The former is three steps below the raised deck, while the latter is two steps above. At pool level, a number of chaise lounges can be strategically placed around the expansive deck for sunbathing and poolside lounging. An adjacent patch of lawn provides contrast to the hardscapes, while the custom cedar fence not only separates the front and backyards, but also creates privacy.
The upper deck features a striking outdoor kitchen, which is sheltered from sun and rain by a roof structure crafted from robust Douglas fir timbers and clad in Wiarton ledgerock. This space also features a wet bar and gourmet grill with a full complement of luxury stainless steel accessories. Lighting for kitchen tasks was also strategically placed to illuminate each key area.
The focal point of the yard is a 5.5- x 12.8-m (18- x 42-ft) dry-gunite pool featuring a premium white-glass bead interior bordered by contrasting Wiarton flagstone coping. A matching raised ledgerock wall features three soothing waterfalls set against a tall cedar privacy hedge.
The adjoining cabana is clad in stone with board and batten to match the home’s architecture. It features a covered lounge area and three interior rooms: washroom, change room, and pool equipment room.
Two ledgerock planters add elegance to the deep end, while an underwater swim-out bench is conveniently located beside the chaise lounges. A co-ordinating ledgerock platform for the diving board was also installed to give this feature a more elegant look.
The entire backyard is illuminated with a light-emitting diode (LED) lighting system to bring all of the important elements to life at night. Further, lighting used to illuminate the pool and waterfalls can be programmed to display a myriad of colours.
As the falling light of evening changes the mood, the spill-over light from the outdoor kitchen provides soft lighting for the outdoor dining table. Two, large accent candles are all that is needed to add the final romantic touch.
