A family-friendly sanctuary for all seasons
Project by Pool Craft
This multi-level outdoor entertainment space in Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ont., was developed by Pool Craft with the area’s natural elements in mind. Designers used three different elevations in the project, taking advantage of the land’s natural grade and creating multiple entertainment spaces for both kids and adults.
The homeowner was looking for an elegantly rustic design to complement the lot’s surrounding wooded landscape. The upper area of the yard features a large firepit, ideal for intimate entertaining and campfire sing-alongs. This space is surrounded by armour stone boulders, which also frame the charcoal grey stairway leading from the firepit to a cozy lounge, creating a clean and continuous look. This seating area is outfitted with plush outdoor furniture, adorned with slate- and cream-coloured cushions, which accent the surrounding interlocking stones. A wood pergola, crafted from large Douglas fir beams, borders this space, matching the design’s natural esthetic.
A 1.2-m (4-ft) sheer descent, backlit with light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, pours out of an exposed rock wall beneath the raised lounge and into a 5.5- x 11-m (18- x 36-ft) pool featuring a midnight ocean vinyl-liner pattern. The pool uses energy-efficient equipment, including a salt system to reduce chlorine demand and an advanced automation system, which allows the homeowner to control water elements and lighting from a mobile device. A square, fibreglass spill-over spa, featuring a wooden privacy screen which enhances the design’s natural elements, is adjoined to the pool. The pool and spa are framed with dark ebony granite coping for a sharp, symmetrical appearance.
Cream-coloured patio stones with hints of grey adorn the surrounding deck and lead into a large, open-concept cabana. This area houses a full kitchen with a stainless steel barbeque and a covered living room. White granite countertops accent the space’s black finishes, creating a contemporary, sophisticated look. The living room includes a high-definition (HD) smart television and is equipped with a surround sound system that is capable of projecting audio throughout the backyard. Positioned below the television is an in-wall natural gas fireplace, which, combined with an infrared patio heater, creates a cozy space that is accessible year-round. Just outside the cabana is a stone-covered wood-fired pizza oven and an additional dining area, ideal for large parties, as well as private family dinners.
