Small backyard transforms into an entertainer’s dream
Project by Betz Pools Ltd.
This classic home located on a ravine in Hamilton underwent a renovation, which included the addition of a large two-storey structure at the back of the lot. As a result, the backyard area was significantly reduced. When presented with the challenge, the Betz Pool’s design team created a plan that could accommodate a pool as well as entertaining areas in the available space.
The outdoor landscape boasts a 4.3- x 9.1-m (14- x 30-ft) custom concrete pool with a premium French Grey PebbleTec interior, which emits a soft aqua glow at night. The corner entry steps are adjoined by one of two underwater swim-out benches, where the homeowners can lounge and soak in the view over the infinity edge toward the ravine. Four comfortable chaise lounges on the deck offer additional space to relax and unwind.
The elevated stone wall at the deep end of the pool is perfect for diving and features a sheer descent waterfall. Dense foliage behind the wall adds privacy and protection from the steep drop. The adjacent ravine side of the wall, which also acts as a retaining wall, is topped with a 76.2-mm (3-in.) tempered-glass wall, which provides a visible zero edge.
The walkouts off the home’s living room and kitchen open onto a large elevated patio, which is heated for winter use. The basement below the patio contains a spacious storage and pool equipment room.
The patio also houses a stunning custom concrete spa with insulated plumbing, which ensures year-round use for the client. When not in use, the water from the spa recirculates by cascading down the front tile spill wall and travelling back to the pool via an underdeck river. This creates an ancillary water feature for the adjoining sitting area.
The Napoleon gas fire feature, which is supplemented by battery-powered candle lanterns, lends a feeling of warmth on cool spring and fall evenings. The patio and deck areas are finished in natural Owen Sound flagstone set on a concrete base with matching natural stone coping and ledgerock walls. The soft beige tones of the stone complement the natural colour palette of the home. The custom-designed wood fence has a charcoal stain to match the colour of the window trim.
With the home’s living room along one side and kitchen on the other,
entertaining can take place both inside and out. After dark, the backyard
takes on an appealing aura due to the strategically placed array of garden
lights that can be controlled with the backyard automation system.
