BUILDER | Olympic Pools & Spas Sydney, N.S. www.olympicpoolsandspas.com Tel: 902-562-3010 Nautical PA R A D I S E A Creating an aquatic retreat by maximizing space in a small backyard Although this homeowner’s backyard in Sydney, N.S., was rather petite, compromise was not an option when it came time to maximize the once unusable space to its fullest potential. With this in mind, Olympic Pools & Spas, also in Sydney, created an extension of the family’s indoor space to create a beautiful outdoor oasis, complete with all of the desired amenities without the backyard feeling cramped or looking crowded. A nautical theme was incorporated into various design elements, including a rope railing with monkey’s fist knots and glass marine buoys, while the deck was designed with multiple exit and entry points for ease of navigation and to give the impression of a larger, more open space. One of the main elements in the backyard is a 4.8- x 9.7-m (16- x 32-ft) vinyl-lined pool with a 1-m (3-ft) shallow end, which gradually slopes to a 2.4-m (8-ft) deep end. The pool includes a dual, light emitting diode (LED)-lighting system, salt chlorine generator, heat pump, 1.8-m (6-ft) walk-in step and a diving board. Another focal point of the backyard is the 2.3- x 2.3-m (7.4- x 7.4-ft), 1-m (3-ft) deep Bullfrog Spa, which features a variety of therapeutic JetPaks— including wrist and hamstring jets—for optimal massage. The adult members of the family enjoy the health benefits of the hot tub, and when the pool is out of season, they are still able to utilize their backyard yearround, as it provides a relaxing area for stress relief and adds to their social life. For its size, the hot tub is capable of seating a large number of people and includes shorter seats for children and cooling down, as well as deep-well seats for the extremely tall and full body massage. The hot tub’s sandstone-interior finish and mahogany skirt co-ordinates with other features in the backyard, including the dyed, stamped-concrete pool deck and cedar-shingled storage shed. As there was no green space in the backyard, strategically placed plants and grasses, along with lanterns and candles, were used to complete the resort-like atmosphere. Finally, locker compartments were designed beneath the deck and corner seat to increase storage.
